The coast of L'Ametlla de Mar, 20 kilometres long, is an enchanting, unspoilt landscape. This corner of the Baix Ebre was once no more than a strategic spot for watchtowers against pirates, until in the 19th century it became home to a number of Valencian fishing families. It quickly grew into an important centre of trade with Cambrils, Tarragona and Reus.

Since the first farming and fishing cooperatives were founded (the harbour was built in 1920), growth has been notable, and the town still keeps, despite the emerging trade and inevitable modernisation, the look of the fishing village it was born as.

Today fishing and tourism are the municipality's two main sources of income.
